As everyone knows I have been doing my thing for over 30 years

and now it’s about time to start putting out some helpful information out there and see if I can show everyone the benefit of this little gem I have come up with for my “How to Faux” video series. I got to thinking that there are a lot of “Do It Yourself” kind of clients out there and if they want to try and save some money by painting  those walls themselves  then take a look at my 7 minute preview of my “Wall Painting Video”

This is full of Information that I have learned over the years and is recorded on site in real time and is an addition to my “How To Faux Video” series. My “Amazing Accents” are designed for small areas and the DIY’ers but first we have to learn the basics and it is important that the walls are properly prepped and base painted before any faux finish can be applied. So with out further ado heres a little short preview to my basic painting video to give you an idea of whats in it and if you find you can use this then follow the link to purchase either a hard copy DVD for your library ………Peace!

In my quest to bring something new to decorative art, I thought it may be best….

to bring this  technique I learned many years ago to get a couple of basics things out to everyone who really want to learn. This technique will even show a couple of tricks to those who thought they knew . Being that I am getting into the teaching scenario I am posting  a small sampling of another one of my dvd’s that I have put together. Again I am on the color theory kick, as usual, so like in my “Fantasy Marble” DVD I talked quite a bit about the subject of color value which is part of  my “Amazing Accents” series.

I thought I would put this technique  in this group because it takes color value one step further and would go so well with the others. Oh , you thought you were done with color value after my marbling video?, no not quite theres still more……..In this segment of the “Amazing Accent” series is still about color value but with the “Broken Color” technique  it’s not only going to give you knowledge about color value its going to give something else thats important about value which is  “Opaqueness and translucency” which is the reason why this finish works so well on its own or as a background to others.

This is a great “Bread & Butter” finish that is cost effective because there is no glaze that is added to the paint so already your saving yourself a bundle, and for the DIY people this is an easy to learn finish, it just takes a little practice as in anything else. The important thing about it is knowing how to choose the right values of color that are used. Now, I know what you’re thinking , “I already know about color theory and how to mix colors”, uh huh, we’ll see , I use to think that many years ago myself until I got into a position to where I could not fix a treatment after bragging, “Oh,I can match anything “ and found myself against a finish that I couldnt because there was yet something more that I didnt understand about color ………yes it’s true , been there and done that…… because believe me, I had to start some where once too, although it was many years ago, the only difference is, that your getting first hand information with your purchase of the dvd or the download and your not going to have to buy dozens of quarts of paint to be able to do this finish comfortably like I did.

This video will be available in two formats A downloadable format which is a little lesser quality and the price will reflect that and also as a DVD which will have to be shipped through my online store at Art Faux World  http://www.artfauxworld.com  when it becomes available  at the end of July

This is about color value like I said and even the DIY person will walk away from this lesson understanding more about color than the pimply faced kid behind the counter at the paint store…….how many times has that happened to you?  uh huh……..thought so…..Im no master but I do know the important things lol

As in everything else there are a few rules to this finish you should stick with when your learning to handle a large wall with this technique, which are. You dont need to worry about drylines. You can stop in the middle of the wall and pick up where you left off the next day. And if done correctly, you generally just have fun with it, So here’s a sample of it for you to get a look at for now and I should have the DVD ready for mailing by midweek

Take a look at what I have pulled out of the backroom! These are some Foils that I have used for some really cool accent finishes that I will be bringing out on video

These are 2ftx5ft samples of 10 different colors with a couple of halogram foils

There are several artists that I have studied with over the years and if it were not for all of them I would not be where I am today.
First off, I would like to thank Donna Phelps of the Sarasota School of Decorative Arts and Architectual Finishes who I met many years ago when I was in search of expanding my education into the decorative arts and if it were not for her I probabaly wouldnt have met most of these artists that I have met.
So to show my appreciation for them all I am going to write a little something about them and how they have influenced my life
The reason for this post is to bring attention to an artist that I met just last year through a class that with Donna’s hard work hard work managed to put it together for November of 2008 …….Thank You Donna ….. I am very greatful …..

Now I am going to write a little bit about each artist that has been an influence on my life and after being notified that there was a very special video that had been posted by Teresa Rogers Cochran I had to jump om this right away because I feel so strongly about what this man has accomplished by this 5 year project. I first started researching this artist some years ago after Donna had introduced me to yet another artist who also was a guest instructor at her school. Some how she sensed the kind of knowledge I was in search of even when I didnt know myself and so I was introduced to Sheri Hoeger an airbrush artist of Big Oaks Art Studio in California, you see Donna and I actually became close friends over the years and she probably knows me better that I know myself sometimes lmao. Shes had to put her foot down with me a couple of times. lol

Sheri is one of the most talented airbrush trompe loeil artists I have seen and I became drawn to her way of teaching because of how she deals with each person on an individual basis as do most of the artists that I have studied with and it was through Sheri that I had first heard of William Cochran.

I will talk more about Donna and Sheri later on in my “Inspiration” blog series but before I do I MUST get this one out for the world to see. In these economic times I think everyone should here this story and I can only hope that it does for you, what it has done for me.
In the summer of 2008 I was suffering through a tremendous amount of artists block that was destroying my creative energy. This was something I heard of and never have experienced it personally and quite frankly thought it was bullshit. Well let me tell you something….. it is something that is very real and very devastating….period. I would sit for hours staring at a blank canvas or board or whatever and I wanted to paint, but and absolutely nothing could get me motivated, inspired, energize whatever term you want to use, but it was destroying me creatively and nothing seemed to work to get that DRIVE, that ENERGY, that EXCITEMENT, going ………nothing…………………………………………………………..depression set in…………something has to be done

So after realizing that I had to do something about it I started researching the internet and for some reason I ended up on Williams site and remembered how Sheri had talked about William , his passion , knowledge , Inspiration and I read every single word on his site, his work , his accomplishments , his Inspiration and believe me its a big site lmao.

This moved me in a way that I can not explain and probably never will be able to, but I knew I had to meet this arist………

I searched and tried to find out if he was going to be teaching somewhere and I did find out that he was doing guest instructions at Sheri’s Studio at Big Oak Arts and from they way it looked, he was there on a regular basis which was only a couple of times a year well I was stumped, I dont know what it was or why it was but I knew I just had to get to one of his classes, but the only thing was with learning from William he will not take you as a student unless you had his prerquisite which was a color value study of a bust of “Cesar”…………………mandatory………..shit! I missed the class at Big Arts………….

Now I believe everything happens for a reason, people, places, things,circumstances………wrong…….right……..good or bad…………..everything ……… has its reason for happening in this universe and the only thing that matters is the outcome of the choices that you make……..

Well the phone rings……and it was Donna (I’m always glad to hear from Donna) and she tells me that “Art I think i may have something here you might be interested in” and she tells me that William Cochran is going to teach his prerequsite class in November…………yes the excitment was overwhelming and actually lifted me up on my feet and encouraged me to get off my ass and paint something even if its wrong! “paint it fool !” I did …………a friggen mess…………..and I burned it………..

At the time, money was not flowing, the economy was shit, and of course the kind of work that I am involved with is more of a luxurey than it is a necessity and of course, when people tighten up on the proverbial pocket book us artists are the first to go of course, I just didnt have the money for the deposit……….period. Something or someone must have whispered something into Donna’s ear because she says to me, ” I know that times are tough and for a few of us she was willing to let us make installments for this class…….everything happens for a reason…………….fate?………reason?……who knows………I was excited..

November couldnt have come fast enough lmao……..and at last the first day of class……….be careful what you wish for!

After a week with William, I finally understood why the first class was mandatory, it was creatively challenging and gruelling and very very full filling…… I was eating this up like a fat kid at a pie eating contest……….hook line and sinker…… lol because he teaches in such a unique way that seperates a “true trompe loeil” from a “faux trompe leiol”, yes folks there is a difference and I didnt get it until the last day of the class, roflmao……..I walked out of Donnas after the fifth day with new found energy and Inspiration . William not only teaches you how to paint but how to look at things not only artistically but philisophically. He teaches you how to look at light in a whole different way, be open with yourself and to get in touch with the artists mind and how it works and how to deal with the constant battle that goes on with the right side and left side of your brain.

I have been more than just creative with my painting and my art, and I think if you really look at this blog closely and see everything that has gone into it and have been following me closely you will see that being creative goes beyond the canvas…………………….way beyond………………..everything happens for a reason……………………………fate?……………………………who knows

 FREE!

So if you have an accent wall or maybe a whole room you would like to have completed with a professional quality finish gives us a call and let’s discuss the possibilities.

Of course there’s a limit because if there wasn’t I would be broke in a week and have more work than I could possibly handle

This is limited to a maximum of 50 sq/ft of wall area only and would have to be no more than a 4 hour demonstration in a 2 day period (max. 2 hours per day) or a simple one day 2 hour demo. is what most will do. It would have to be a combined effort to promote such an event to the public that would require 20 rsvp’s before the event would be considered a success. Through the discovery of email lists and just general press releases have already proven to work for this kind of an event especially when including an announcement in your current ad campaign.

This should be especially interesting to realtors, interior designers, builders, and yes even home owners who can benefit from this by inviting neighbors friends and even family to watch true artisans at work and having the benefit of viewing samples as well as getting that accent wall done for FREE with one a one room make over.

For larger areas there is discounted pricing should the project require a series of FREE demonstrations.

Area businesses would benefit from this repeat demos because it would draw a repeat crowd to watch the progress and it is sure to draw a crowd when it’s included in your advertising

So pick a wall and give us a call it’s a win win situation

Plus each demonstration and/or seminar will be video recorded in real time to be posted on our traffic generating blog along with links to your business which will bring even more traffic to your website and hopefully your place of business.

In these economic times you must be creative so why not try something daring  and that works!
