House Painting
House painting in Naples Fl is very busy this time of year, just as decorative arts, Mural painting is and most likely more so.
Many know I belong to several social media groups throughout the internet for different reasons and LinkedIn is no different. Like most I use it on a more professional level and so do many painting contractors that are in the Trades as it’s called
Some are looking for the better and/or newest products available while most of us ole dogs just stay with what we have used for years. However the times are a changing with the new E.P.A. laws and V.O.C. regulations and we find ourselves researching for the best new lines available as most of the old stuff has and/or will be forced off the shelves for all house painting including artists, Of course it sucks but what can you do?
Which brings me to the question that was brought up by LinkedIn member Jeff Berg Manager/Lead painter at Berg and sons painting

Peeling and failing paint
This is an age old painting discussion, but I am going to address prep. It’s the most important and usually Lear favorite step in painting. What I am looking for is the most effective and efficient way to strip and prep old failing exterior paint on older houses(most often redwood siding). What are your different methods of prepping?
Tony Santocono Hi im tony of Decorative colors p&d..
is the paint weatherboards and i presume windows and Arch’s follow.
Ok there are different methods of stripping old paint.. i have used eco friendly- smartstrip . its not volatile like other brands, …
Michel Graef Hi Jef, the most effective way is spraying the surface with a paint stripper, airless.
Let it do its job for several hours and then remove it whit a steam cleaner.
Environmental ,what shall I say? But very fast and effective .
Good luck.
MichelBas Burema Jeff, did you ever have heard of Festool? Check their site:

Jose Montenegro Paint shaver a machine that cuts the paint off with blades not sand paper it connects to the hepa vacuum, super clean
Peter DuFresne I’m in my own business an I’ve been painting for over 30yrs an I suggest a vacuum stripper just make sure that your nail head are sunk
Todd Reese I have had good luck with Prime RX in the past. I must admit I try to avoid the jobs with extensive peeling paint prep.
Joshua Hanson What are the lead paint laws in your state. They will determin how you decide to do the job theres a chance you will not without being certified. I see you are supoosed to be a paint pro so i question wether or not you shoulld be askin
Peter Giavanoglou smart strip works wonders if you follow the instructions properly, then vac sand . . . done, simple
Tim Bradley Check local/state laws.Price diff options(sandblasting if necessary,stripper/sand, or just machine sand with 6 inch disc sander(eg.Makita).First we need to look closely at old paint/stain (oil or water based). How many coats are on the hou…
John Davies I’ve used the Alderson back pac sander unit with the stripping discs and there collection system. Go to Alderson sander. com. Another option I’ve used is the Dumond stripping agent you can buy a test pack with small pots of all there strippers so you use the correct one for your project also user friendly both systems work
QUALITY CRAFTMENSHIP HANDYMAN SERVICE If you have a large area ? Try not to use lots of chemicals for environmental safety threw Osha. Power washing removes all loose paint from almost any area. Depends on the tip you will use when washing. Be careful not to tear and damage the wood. Spraying on an angle works best. Good luck
Greg Dueck Wow, never thought of most of these complex solutions. I’m with QCHS above me. Pressure wash, feather sand, prime and paint. If I have severely failed areas or my client requires a full strip I will sand to substrate and paint the area but that is rare in my experience.
brent opsahl Sandblast
Jeff Berg I’m based in Northern California and they’re pretty strict as far as lead base goes, I’ll have to check and see exactly What methods in allowed to use, but I liked the idea of the paint shaver. I’m going to look into that. All your comments are greatly appreciated???
QUALITY CRAFTMENSHIP HANDYMAN SERVICE Agree with the paint shaver as well.
If total area needs to be removed.
Not an easy job for you.
From Maine.. Lots of homes needed the paint removed. We used it to remove most of the paint
Todd Reese Joshua, strict here in Illinois and expensive to certify or renew. More expensive than most client can or are willing to spend to follow the guiidlines. I have too much “good” work to renew again.
Todd Reese Imagine putting a tent over a 3000sq. foot house.
Jaime Fahlgren We use a newer process called Soda Blasting if the paint/stain is required to be completely stripped before we proceed. Here is an interesting article if you are unsure of the difference of sand blasting vs soda blasting. https://turbofuture.com/industrial/What-is-the-Difference-Between-Sand-Blasting-Soda-Blasting
Brent Ward Walnut shell blasting does less damage to the substrate, less dust than sand.
Norman and Freda Kingston we have tight regulations here in NZ. depending on client budget we use most of the above also do estimate on reclad as oftern a more cost effective way long term especially if the client is staying in the property.…
Jeff Berg Say I was to go with the paint shaver method, how would you charge for it/?what is your square footage price
Mark Dewey Jeff Berg, read this…http://www.contractortalk.com/f8/paint-shaver-vs-metabo-vs-festool-sander-93100/
Mark Dewey Then you think, are all jobs something that you have to or need to do? There is so mush good clean and profitable work out there that i get very selective on what jobs i want to take. I seen all your methods, and as good as the may seem or..1w
Mark Dewey Todd Reese, good point, I am with you on that one if you all understand what is said.
Steve Ryan Great info and right on the money as far as options and techniques. I get calls from customers and contractors on our tech line asking, “What is the best way to prepare and get the longest lasting job”? Some swear by FesTool, Paint Shav…
Bruce Frank I’m 100% with Mark Dewey. stay with what you are comfortable with and in your operating cost. After all you are in this because you love your work and to make $$1w
Todd Reese As long as my phone is ringing off the hook and my crews are working more hours than they want , I will avoid peeling paint at all cost. I bid high, and if I still get it, I sub it our.
Lisa Harding It’s really interesting how you prep in California and how much you get paid a day . I myself have just done a large project , I spent 4 days using an electric sander getting rid of flaky paint working at height in some areas . Some a..

frank borges Don’t look for would bring her you got a look for pink this is a lot lot of painting like beige anymore is the best painter to use it if you do the right thing anybody can paint
Gary Myers It depends how much paint you want to remove. Steam works well. At $ 100.00 an hr. bring it on!
Wayne Barbee Well my thought is, if you need to strip a whole house when normal sanding and steam does not work give it to the next person. The best house primer I use in North Carolina is INSL-X STIX. Bonding primer, adheres to anything..glass, ti…
Todd Reese Frank, your insight has literally left me speechless.
Josh Wilder Personally…my “prep” is based on information given to & gathered from the customer… if the substrate is so far gone that it needs to be stripped… then in explaining that to your customer they should also understand that they allow…
Gary Myers Stix is a super glue for sure, but Sherwin Williams has a product just like it for less money, check with a Sherman Williams rep.
Shelly Holmes Well the best way to approach this is to burn all flaking paint. Sanded down and prime with oil based primer, undercoat the area and apply finishing coat.
Steve Ryan I like the idea of steam! can you give us details of the process?
Steve Ryan Although Stix and the above mentioned SW product will stick to anything, i only use them for interior project…. like my kitchen cabinets i did in 2010.
i don’t recommend it for exterior projects like this. The primer dries very firm and …
★ Arthur Morehead Fantastic answers and suggestions here and personally having nearly 4o years in the business myself I would not say any of them were wrong I think I may write a blog with all these responses, What a fantastic group! Bravo!
Martyn Vacher Hi Jeff
We’ve just recently had to strip exterior varnish off of cedar wood siding/cladding. We found the cleanest/ less labour intensive procedure was using the Mirka Deros sander. I’m guessing you’d get this where you are?. If you see.
